It hosted the world's first modern whaling station and pioneered international communications when it welcomed the first telegraph cable, linking Iceland to Europe. Colorful wooden homes line the streets, overseen by starkly picturesque slopes and the soaring summits of Mounts Bjólfur and Strandartindur. Viking had made arrangements to shuttle passengers to and from downtown Reykjavik until late in the night. We decided to stay onboard and enjoy drinks and our farewell dinner.

The coastal cliffs are home to fulmars, kittiwakes, eider ducks, and puffins. We may also visit the Atlantic puffin colony on Hafnarhólmi, a true gem for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. Grímsey may be best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the island—the only part of Iceland to do so.

He indicated that there was a positive COVID-19 case that was discovered during the daily testing. This passenger was vaccinated, asymptomatic, and was already isolated. Up to Deck 7 at the Explorers’ Lounge before 8 am, there were only a few other couples enjoying this signature Norwegian treat.

Rüdesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt has more than 120 vendor stalls representing the yuletide foods and traditions of 20 different countries. Enjoy the merry atmosphere of Marktplatz, which spreads through the Old Town’s cobblestone streets while seasonal music and the scents of regional delicacies fill the air. Try a mug of Rüdesheim’s favourite coffee made with locally distilled Asbach Uralt brandy, or shop for a festive memento to take home.
Wander along a nature trail to discover the park’s restored pre-industrial water mill and a monastery. The Viking 15-day Ancient Adriatic Treasures voyage makes calls in Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Montenegro and Italy including overnight stays in Istanbul, Athens and Venice. Santorini is the stunning highlight of Viking’s 11-day Greek Odyssey voyage . Get fabulously lost in its winding streets lined with whitewashed homes, shops and cafés. From a cliff 400 metres above the ocean, finish your day watching the Cyclades sun setting over the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea.
Day 4: Akureyri, Iceland
Yes, it was time for the dreaded last day of the cruise ritual. With 4 pieces of luggage, yes 4, we planned to put our two larger suitcases out this evening as part of the disembarkation process. This gave us just enough time to get back to the room to change up for our Spa visit. We stayed at the lounge working until trivia started at 12 pm. Grabbing our devices, we went down to the Living Room for another coffee and some more work. By 1 pm, we decided to drop off our stuff in the cabin and grab lunch before our Thermal Suite reservation at 2 pm.

Iceland’s Natural Beauty Map
Farther afield, breathtaking natural sites are in abundance, from towering waterfalls and soaring mountains, to blue thermal springs. Another interesting experience was a visit to the nearby Tank, an old storage facility that once held locally produced fish liver oil. Now, the Tank is a cultural venue that supports local musicians and artists, and boasts unique acoustic features.

You could also take a hike to find puffins at Stórhöfði, where nearly 8 million of them nest every summer. Don’t pass up the chance to climb Mount Eldfell to the volcano’s summit, where you’ll have incredible views of the town below. Stroll the interesting streets of Akureyri, which feature charming, colorful houses.

Our Viking representative escorted us off the ship right around 8 am. On Bus #5 with our tour guide Elsa, we headed out for our morning adventure. While there was some confusion about the meeting spot, our bus eventually arrived at the tour company’s headquarters. The Princess was tired and had a headache from a long day of travel and lack of sleep.
The landscape in this geothermal area was unlike anything else we saw in Iceland. Hot, steaming and looking more like the surface of Mars than anything on Earth, be prepared for the strong smell of sulphur as you explore the area. Godafoss Waterfall – This fall is one of the largest and most picturesque that we have ever seen. The walk is very easy and you can get very close to the falls from many different viewing spots. We walked to several areas to admire the view, and they were all fantastic. We also had time to walk through the very nice café and gift shop that was near the falls.
Just as we remembered from our previous trip, the waffles were fresh, hot, and delicious. This meant going to the cruise ship’s nightclub, Torshavn, to listen to the ship’s band. Lasting exactly 90 minutes, we had just enough time to get to the front of the ship for tonight’s first stage performance. Aptly named the ABBA Songbook, the 40 minute show was an assortment of the mega-band’s biggest hits.
These are six combined falls that, together, comprise the largest and most spectacular in the Westfjords. We participated in the included excursion, which included a walk around the small town. With a population of only about 400 residents, our ship quickly more than doubled the size of the town! Djúpivogur is best known for the Eggs of Merry Bay, a set of large sculptures that showcase the eggs of 34 bird species that nest along the coastlines of Iceland.
Mingle with the locals as they relax in these pool-like thermal baths and watch them play chess in the water. Even without the side shows of the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights, Norway’s scenery is spectacular. Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is breathtaking to view up close, while Eidfjord is the gateway to Hardangervidda, Europe’s largest mountain plateau. The 15-day Viking Homelands ocean voyage explores Scandinavia by sea, following ancient mariner routes.
